Associate of Science in Paralegal Studies

This Associate of Science degree program is designed to prepare students to serve as legal assistants or paralegals working under the direction of a licensed attorney. Paralegals are prepared to assist in legal proceedings by collecting facts, conducting client interviews, preparing legal briefs and documents, and monitoring and reviewing regulatory and administrative laws. The paralegal curriculum blends liberal studies, business coursework, and legal studies. Graduates may work in law firms, governmental agencies, as well as private companies.

This program includes courses such as:

Introduction to Paralegal Studies: This course is designed to provide students with a general overview of the US legal system and the operations of a law firm or legal department. The fundamental skills used in the legal profession and the role of the paralegal will be covered.

Civil Procedures: This course will cover the various topics that arise in the pre-trial and post trial stages of civil litigation. Federal rules of civil procedures which serve as models for many state jurisdictions will be interpreted. The role of paralegals in preparing for legal proceedings in a civil trial are emphasized.

Client Advocacy: In this course students observe and demonstrate the essential skills of applying critical thinking and communication skills to client interviews, investigation and well reasoned legal arguments. The fundamental principles of advocating, formulating and presenting the legal needs of the client will be applied in both written and oral arguments.

Capstone Project – Paralegal Studies: This course prepares the student to assume a professional role in a legal office setting. The student will synthesize their knowledge from paralegal studies and general education as they apply to working in the legal profession. The course includes select case studies and document preparation.
