The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with ESL Specialization degree program prepares educators to work effectively with English speakers of other languages and provide leadership in curriculum and instruction in schools. The program focuses on instructional methods and materials for teaching language and content; the importance of culture in addressing learning needs; testing and evaluation; and developing standards-driven curriculum to use with speakers of other languages.

Program

Graduates develop the knowledge and skills to work with non-native speakers of English and help them develop social and academic language skills. In addition, graduates with an ESL specialization often support other content areas (math, science, geography, social studies, etc.). Graduates may also use the knowledge gained to be eligible for state certification or endorsement in ESL. (Check with your state department for certification requirements and program approval.)

Courses

Courses apply directly to the demands placed on school leaders and provide the tools necessary to empower meaningful improvements in their schools.

Coursework includes five core courses, including Community of Learners, Curriculum & Instructional Design (with emphasis on Multicultural Classrooms), and Teacher Leadership. In addition, there are seven ESL courses, including Foundations of ESL and Bilingual Education, Methods & Materials for Teaching English as a Second Language, Linguistics for Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages.

A total of twelve, 5-week courses will be completed in 18 months. There is typically 1-2 weeks off between courses.
